How to build a shelter in the wild?

How to build a shelter in the wild?Shelter

Image: wikihow.com

Without a knife or similar tool, it is very difficult bu build a shelter. If you have no such a tool then you should find some hard stones which have sharp edges. You can attach it to a wooden stick and tie it in place with some wood fibers. You have to make some trials to find a useful solution. (However, if you have bootlaces, you can use them either.)

Our ancestors in Stone Age, had been using such devices for hunting, building shelters and protecting their families. If we try, we can find much better solutions to invent some useful tools necessary to survive.

If we can find an empty cave which is large enough for us, it might be a wonderful solution. However we should check for predator droppings or similar traces around to be sure. Otherwise, we might be in danger. If possible we must close the entrance of the cave when we are inside. Some logs and large stones will be help us to do it.

Be sure that your shelter is not in a dry river bed. In case of a flood, you might be in a great risk.

If you couldn’t find a cave that can protect you, then you can build your own cave. For example you can dig a hole big enough, and cover on top of it with branches, leaves and earth. But, always let fresh air could be circulated in it.

If there are no predators around, you can create your shelter on the ground by branches and green leaves also.

How to find drinking water in the wild?

How to find drinking water in the wild?

Investigate

  • Search around for a stream or a river. Flowing water generally is more clear. If possible, find traces of birds or animals. If they drink that water, you may drink also.
  • If you could not find a flowing water source, but find a water pool, then check if there exists any water insects in it. If there are, then you can drink it. However if you have a metal container, it is better to boil it first.
  • Rain is a very good water source. It is tasteless. But, it is clean, potable and easily collectible for later consumption if you have a container.
  • You can lick dew on green leaves early in the morning.
  • If it is very cold and you can find some snow or ice then you can eat them in order to fulfill your thirst. Of course, if you have a pot and fire, it is better to melt and boil it before drinking.
  • Never drink sea water, urine or any salty water. If you do so, you will increase dehydration of your body. So, never do it.
  • Follow the traces of animals. All animals know water resources in order to survive. They can lead you to that water source if you follow them.
  • Some plants contain water in their stems or roots. Check them.
  • Dig a hole on the ground if you are in a forest. Check if water seeps from the walls of the hole. Try it at different places.

Signs of wildlife that shows the existence of a nearby water source

  • Tracks
  • Feces
  • Mosquitos
  • Bees
  • Flies

Desalination
If you have only sea water or similar salty water, you should desalinate it before using.

The simplest method of desalination is to vaporizing and then condensing water. If you have a metallic container, you can boil salty water in it. While boiling, put a towel or similar cloth on top of the container and let it absorb vapor. Then you can squeeze the towel to obtain water drops, or you can suck it.

I will continue to write similar notes in my coming articles.

How can you survive without technology

How can you survive without technology

Photo: playbuzz.com

Modern human has forgotten basic vital details required in the natural environment. Especially people who live in mega-cities, know almost nothing about actual wild life.

Imagine that you are left alone on a deserted island after a ship accident. There is no wreckage on the shore. There are no human beings around. You have no technological devices. Nothing to eat. Nothing to drink…

How can you survive?

First, let us make a small list of minimal requirements:

  • A shelter to protect yourself against extreme atmospheric conditions and possible wild animal attacks
  • Drinkable water
  • Food
  • Fire
  • Collecting vegetables and fruits
  • Hunting
  • Something to wear when required
  • Hope to return back to your social and technological life

You can live maximum 3 days without drinking potable water. Otherwise dehydration will kill you. So, you must find drinkable water as soon as possible.

You might be hungry too. But you can resist hunger about three weeks. So it can wait. But thirst will not wait for a long time.

To find drinkable water you must search around. Here are some possible water resources:

Rain water might be collected in some small pools. That water might be tasteless, but it is clean. You can consume it.

If it is raining, you can collect raindrops using some large leaves. If you have a container, you can use leaves like a funnel to catch the water drops and direct them into the container.

I will continue to give you some more details in my coming posts.

In any case, take care of yourself. Human body is very sensitive, but it can also resist unbelievable extreme conditions. Be calm, and believe in yourself!

Follow my new posts.

Listen to songs to master English

Listen to songs to master English

Picture from: smashingtopten.com

Learning with songs is a very effective and amusing event. Rhythm and sound help memory processes creating a lot of extra electro-chemical links between brain cells. These synaptic connections between neurons (nerve cells) maintain long-term memory. Lyrics, poems with rhymes, and songs can be memorized easier, because they are a collection of some rhythmic and similar sounds.

http://www.esolcourses.com/topics/learn-english-with-songs.html is a very useful site for an ESL student. If you like, there are tons of interactive online lessons on the site. “Learning English with songs” is one of them.

But, do not limit yourself with the exercises. Listen to every type of songs which contain English lyrics. Try to sense the meaning. Do not force yourself to understand all of the words. Take it easy! Relax! Listen to the music.

When you catch the whole story, and want to grab more details; then you should search for the lyrics of the song on the internet. Check the words that you misunderstood or didn’t know the exact meaning. Study the words and the line structures. (In lyrics, there might be some grammatical mistakes. Be aware of them.)

If you can sing the song in a high volume, it will be very helpful for you to internalize the details.

Have fun!

These murals are painted in the concept of Mural-Ist by Kadikoy Municipal. The activities of this year will be completed by the end of September.

Mural is an art that can be easily shared and accepted by people. It is an uprising against gray. They color the city walls and bring them to life.

I congratulate Kadikoy municipal for its efforts and supports, and I hope that these type of activities to be continued in larger areas and in better circumstances.

Your eyes can repair themselves

Your eyes are marvelous!
If you know how to treat them, they can repair themselves.

Your eyes can repair themselves

Our eyes are surrounded by three sets of twin muscles. Since our eye tissue is elastic, it can be easily reshaped by the aid of these muscles. However, because of modern life styles, we generally misuse these precious organs without knowing that we make harm.

We live in small rooms, we are surrounded by walls, we read books, we watch television, we look to our PC’s, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones… We force our eyes to look only to short distances. Therefore, with the effect of getting older, we need reading glasses after forty. Because, our eyes are getting used to work in a limited range. Most of the time they are looking to some very near objects. They become more rigid, and lose the ability to focus to different distances. Our eye muscles becomes lazy.

If you use contact lenses or eye glasses, you know that they never cure your eyes. In time, your eye numbers gets worse.

But we have some good news also. In order to solve most of our eye problems, we only need to exercise our eye muscles. 15 minutes a day for a few months, can refresh your eyes with a perfect health.

Let me give you a few simple exercises:

  • Sit comfortably on a chair or similar place. Rub your palms to each other firmly until the become warm. Then close your eyes, and place your palms over your eyes gently without applying any pressure. Make sure that no light can reach your eyes directly. Wait for some time until you see only complete darkness. Repeat if required for 3 minutes.
  • Close your eyes firmly. Squeeze your eyelids and face also. Count to 5. Then open your eyes, and release your face muscles. Repeat the exercise for 10 times.
  • Massage around your eyes gently for about one minute.
  • Look up and down without moving your head. Repeat 10 times.
  • Look left and right without moving your head. Repeat 10 times.
  • Look upper-left and lower-right without moving your head. Repeat 10 times.
  • Look upper-right and lower-left without moving your head. Repeat 10 times.
  • Turn your eyes clockwise for ten times.
  • Turn your eyes counter-clockwise for ten times.
  • Hold a pencil and stretch your arm in front of you. Look at your nose tip, then look at the tip of pencil, and look at a far object. Repeat the same for 10 times.
  • Look at some near and far objects at different distances randomly. Whenever you focused to an object, jump to another immediately. Repeat it for 2 minutes.
  • Look at sea waves, leaves of trees, or clouds.

Our eyes are precious. We should protect them and treat as required. They don’t need much. Only protect them being over stressed.

Super effective technique EFT

Super effective technique EFTHave you ever heard about the super effective technique EFT? This term is the abbreviation of the words “Emotional Freedom Techniques”.

EFT is based on the traditional Chinese energy system, and it is modernized by Gary Craig on 1990’s. The technique is applied by tapping to certain acupuncture points on the skin. These points are especially placed on the head, on the chest, and on the fingers.

Traditional Chinese energy system says that any blockages on the energy system are the main reasons of the physical and mental disturbances. On the other hand, when these blockages are removed from the body, consequently, the related illnesses also disappear.

In Emotional Freedom Techniques, these blockages are dissolved by tapping eighteen acupuncture (or acupressure) points in a row.

EFT is effective on all type of stresses, worries, and fears. Besides the emotional problems, physical pains are also could be controlled by applying the technique.

EFT can be applied even by children. Because it is very easy and simple technique. However, severe problems must be resolved only by EFT professionals.

If you want to learn more about the technique, please visit eft.axtelsoft.com.

You must be ready to be surprised when you try it!

Online grammar checks

Image: huffingtonpost.com

Image: huffingtonpost.com

Although I use an automatic proofreading system while editing, sometimes I check my copy before I publish it.

There are some online grammar checking systems on the web.

Recently I had found such a system: grammarly.com. Although it says that it is free, actually it forces you to upgrade to the paid membership. And, it makes it in a disturbing manner. I had tried them for a few days, then stopped to use them. Their approach is not ethical. However, maybe their paid services are above the average. I don’t know it. But their free service does not meet my normal expectations.

There are some other alternatives too. A few of them are below:

My favorite site is www.paperrater.com.
It has both free, and paid services. However, free grammar checking is quite efficient, and they don’t disturb you to inviting to upgrade on each step. You may give a try.

If you know a better free grammar checking tool, please inform me.

Learning idioms is a piece of cake

Learning idioms is a piece of cakeIdioms are important. However, learning idioms is as easy as pie.

According to wikipedia, “It is estimated that there are at least twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions in the English language.”

Using idioms in your sentences, gives a different flavor to your messages. However idioms are generally used while speaking. In formal English their usage is limited.

Here a small idiom list for ESL students:

  • Broke: have no money
  • Cut it out: stop doing something not good
  • In ages: for a very long time
  • Give someone a hand: help somebody
  • Feeling blue: feeling sad
  • Screwed: being in big trouble
  • Barking up the wrong tree: Looking in the wrong place, accusing an innocent person
  • Devil’s advocate: presenting a counter argument
  • It takes two to tango: more than one person is required to communicate
  • A picture paints a thousand words: A visual presentation explains much more better than words
  • Once in a blue moon: something that happens rarely

From now on, we will share some idioms like do for words. However they will be rarer comparing with the words. Our tooltip system will also cover idioms too. For example, “a piece of cake” idiom is in the tooltip list now.
