How many words should you learn daily?
Apparently, there is no unique answer for that question. However, there are some widely accepted ranges:
- One word per day
- Five to ten words per day
- More than ten words per day
IMHO (in my humble opinion) it is a good practice to start with a single word per day. Maybe it is formulated better as “at least one word daily”.
When you enlarge your vocabulary, you can broaden your daily target also.
The following list gives an idea for an ideal word count for an efficient vocabulary (Numbers are related to Russian, but it can be applied to other languages also.)
the 75 most common words make up 40% of occurences
the 200 most common words make up 50% of occurences
the 524 most common words make up 60% of occurences
the 1257 most common words make up 70% of occurences
the 2925 most common words make up 80% of occurences
the 7444 most common words make up 90% of occurences
the 13374 most common words make up 95% of occurences
the 25508 most common words make up 99% of occurences
The above figures are from the aticle: http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/e/guide/vocabulary-learning/how-many-words.html.
If you have a lexemic frequency dictionary, you can choose which words to be learned first. Starting from the most frequently used words, you will speed up your learning process.
